Summary
Anisodontea scabrosa, commonly known as Coarse Cape Mallow, is an evergreen shrub native to the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces of South Africa, where it thrives in rocky slopes and scrubland. This plant typically grows to a height of 4-6 feet (1.2-1.8 meters) and a width of 3-6 feet (0.9-1.8 meters), with a rounded and bushy habit. It features heart-shaped leaves and bears showy pink to red flowers with a darker center, which bloom profusely in winter and continue sporadically throughout the year.
Coarse Cape Mallow is valued for its long flowering season and vibrant blooms that add color to the garden during the cooler months. It is well-suited for use in mixed borders, as a specimen plant, or in Mediterranean-style gardens. This shrub is drought-tolerant once established, making it a good choice for water-wise landscapes. It prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade and requires well-drained soil. While generally pest-free, it can be susceptible to spider mites and whiteflies if grown in hot, dry conditions. Pruning after flowering encourages bushiness and more blooms.CC BY-SA 4.0
