Estimated Native Range
Summary
Antirrhinum hispanicum, commonly known as Spanish Snapdragon, is an evergreen subshrub native to rocky areas, scrublands, and open woodlands of the Western Mediterranean, particularly Spain and Morocco. It typically grows 30 to 35 centimeters (12 to 14 inches) tall, but it can reach up to 60 centimeters (24 inches) in height. The Spanish Snapdragon has a sprawling habit with short, procumbent or ascending stems and small, narrow leaves. It produces charming pink and yellow bilabiate flowers that bloom profusely in the spring, with continued flowering through summer and fall, adding long-lasting color to the garden.
The plant is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor, well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, xeriscaping, and Mediterranean-themed landscapes. It is also suitable for container planting and border edges. While it prefers full sun, it can tolerate light shade, especially in hot climates. The Spanish Snapdragon is relatively low-maintenance, requiring only moderate watering once established. It is not commonly afflicted by diseases, but it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
