Summary
Arabis blepharophylla, commonly known as Coast Rock Cress, is an evergreen perennial herb native to coastal bluffs and rocky outcrops within the chaparral and coastal sage scrub communities of California. It typically forms a basal rosette of fuzzy, oblong leaves from which thin, hairy stems rise, reaching up to 12 inches in height. The plant is adorned with clusters of small, four-petaled flowers that are bright purplish-pink and emit a sweet fragrance, blooming profusely in spring. The flowers are particularly showy, making it a favorite among gardeners for its ornamental value.
Coast Rock Cress is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor, well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, borders, and xeriscaping. It is also appreciated for its extended flowering period and the sweet scent of its blooms. The cultivar ’Frühlingszauber’, which has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, is particularly noted for its vibrant flower color and robust growth. This plant is best grown in full sun to part shade and requires minimal water once established, reflecting its adaptation to the Mediterranean climate of its native habitat. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
