Summary

Araucaria heterophylla, commonly known as Norfolk Island Pine, is an evergreen tree native to the subtropical forested regions of Norfolk Island, a small island in the Pacific Ocean. It is characterized by a distinctive symmetrical, triangular shape with widely spaced, horizontal branches that become more irregular with age. Mature trees can reach heights of 50–65 meters (160–210 feet) with straight vertical trunks, and they are remarkably resilient to the strong onshore winds that often distort other species. The gray-brown bark of the Norfolk Island Pine exfoliates in fine scales, adding to its ornamental value. The tree does not produce showy flowers, but its architectural form and evergreen foliage make it a favorite for decorative purposes.

Norfolk Island Pines are valued for their exotic appearance and adaptability to a range of climates, from Mediterranean to humid subtropical. They are commonly used as ornamental trees in coastal areas due to their tolerance to salt and wind. The species is also popular as an indoor plant, especially during the holiday season, due to its resemblance to a traditional Christmas tree. When grown indoors, it requires a bright, cool location and should not be exposed to extreme temperatures or direct, intense sunlight. Outdoors, the tree thrives in deep sandy soils with good water availability during its establishment phase. It is often planted in urban settings, parks, and as a focal point in large gardens. While it prefers part shade, it can also tolerate full sun conditions. The tree requires medium amounts of water and well-drained soils. Potential problems include sensitivity to frost and root rot if overwatered. It is also susceptible to mealybugs and scale insects, especially when grown indoors.CC BY-SA 4.0
