Summary

Arctostaphylos densiflora, commonly known as Vine Hill Manzanita, is an evergreen shrub native to the coastal sage scrub and chaparral of a small area in Sonoma County, central California. It typically grows to a height and width of 6-10 feet (1.8-3 meters), forming dense, low clumps. Vine Hill Manzanita has a striking appearance with its smooth, red-brown bark and shiny green, oval to widely lance-shaped leaves that are less than three centimeters long. From late winter to early spring, it produces showy inflorescences of light to bright pink urn-shaped flowers, followed by small, red-brown drupes that are about half a centimeter wide.

This species is valued for its drought tolerance, making it suitable for xeriscaping and native plant gardens. It is also appreciated for its ornamental qualities, including its attractive bark and flowers. Vine Hill Manzanita is used in cultivation for habitat restoration, as an accent plant, or in mass plantings for erosion control. It thrives in full sun to part shade and requires very little water once established, preferring well-drained soils. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to fungal diseases such as root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. It is also prone to infestation by the manzanita leaf-gall aphid, which can cause unsightly galls but rarely harms the plant.CC BY-SA 4.0
