Estimated Native Range
Summary
Arctostaphylos nummularia, commonly known as Glossyleaf Manzanita, is an evergreen shrub or subshrub with distinctive red bark, native to the coastal chaparral and forested areas of California, particularly in the Coast Ranges. It typically grows to a height of 1 foot (0.3 meters) and spreads 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters) wide. The plant is characterized by its smooth, glossy leaves and its form, which can be either mounding or ground-hugging. The flowers, which appear in late winter to early spring, are urn-shaped, ranging from white to pale pink, and are often visited by native bees and hummingbirds.
Glossyleaf Manzanita is valued for its low water requirements, making it suitable for xeriscaping and drought-tolerant gardens. Its striking red bark and attractive evergreen foliage, along with its spring flowers, provide year-round interest. This species is often used in native plant gardens, rock gardens, and as a ground cover in appropriate climates. It thrives in well-draining soils, tolerates a range of soil types, including poor soils, and prefers full sun to partial shade. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to fungal diseases such as root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly draining soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
