Estimated Native Range
Summary
Arctostaphylos parryana, commonly known as Parry manzanita, is an evergreen shrub native to the chaparral and coastal sage scrub communities of Southern California, specifically within the western Transverse Ranges, from coastal Santa Barbara County to the San Gabriel Mountains. It can grow up to 7 feet tall and is characterized by its erect form, red-barked stems, and bright green, oval leaves. Parry manzanita produces small, urn-shaped flowers that are pink-tinted white, typically blooming from January to March. The flowers are followed by rounded, red-brown drupes that are attractive to wildlife.
Parry manzanita is valued for its ornamental qualities, including its striking red bark and the contrast between its foliage and flowers. It is used in native plant gardens, as a focal point in landscape design, and for habitat restoration projects. This species is adapted to dry conditions and requires well-drained soils, making it suitable for xeriscaping. It thrives in full sun to part shade and is tolerant of poor soils, though it prefers acidic conditions. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to fungal diseases in poorly drained soils. Parry manzanita is not known for aggressive roots or significant disease problems, but it is sensitive to overwatering and root disturbance.CC BY-SA 4.0
