Summary
Arctostaphylos silvicola, commonly known as Bonny Doon Manzanita, is an evergreen shrub native to the sandy soils of coastal California, particularly within the chaparral and mixed evergreen forests. It is a large, tree-like shrub that can grow over 6 meters tall, with a striking appearance due to its dark red, smooth bark and greenish-gray leaves that are oval and can be up to 3.5 centimeters long. The leaves may also have a slightly woolly texture. Bonny Doon Manzanita is notable for its showy inflorescences of long, urn-shaped white flowers that bloom in the spring and winter, followed by the production of drupes that are 6 to 12 millimeters wide.
This shrub is valued for its drought tolerance and its ability to thrive in full sun with very low to low water requirements, making it suitable for xeriscaping and native plant gardens. It prefers well-drained soils and can be used for erosion control on slopes. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to fungal diseases such as root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. Bonny Doon Manzanita is also appreciated for its attractive bark and winter flowering, which provides interest during a season when few plants are in bloom.CC BY-SA 4.0
