Summary

Argentina anserina, commonly known as Silverweed or Common Silverweed, is a perennial herb native to a wide range of habitats including moist meadows, grasslands, stream banks, and sandy soils in the Northern Hemisphere, extending to temperate regions of the globe. It typically forms low-growing mats with runners and reaches a height of 4-16 inches (10-40 cm). Silverweed has pinnate leaves that are silvery-white beneath due to a dense covering of silky hairs, and it bears bright yellow flowers from late spring to midsummer, which are modest in size but can be quite showy en masse.

Silverweed is valued for its attractive foliage and flowers, as well as its ability to thrive in challenging conditions, making it an excellent ground cover for erosion control and for planting in areas with poor soil. It is also used in herbal medicine and has been a traditional food source in some cultures. In cultivation, Silverweed prefers full sun to part shade and moist, well-drained soils but can tolerate a range of conditions, including temporary flooding and drought. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can spread aggressively via runners, so it may require management to keep it within bounds.CC BY-SA 4.0
