Summary

Arnica cordifolia, commonly known as Heartleaf Arnica, is a deciduous perennial herb native to montane and subalpine regions, often found in moist meadows, open forests, and along streambanks in the Western USA and Canada. It typically grows to a height of nearly half a meter with one or more erect stems. The leaves are distinctive, being heart-shaped to arrowhead-shaped with finely toothed margins. Heartleaf Arnica blooms from late spring to early summer, producing showy flower heads that feature a fringe of bright golden ray florets around 3 centimeters long and golden yellow disc florets at the center, lined with white-haired phyllaries that may have resin glands. The fruit is a hairy achene, which is dispersed by wind thanks to its off-white pappus.

This plant is valued for its vibrant yellow flowers that attract pollinators and its ability to thrive in a variety of mountainous habitats. It is used in native plant gardens, restoration projects, and as a component in naturalistic landscaping. Heartleaf Arnica requires moist conditions and can tolerate full sun to partial shade. It is adaptable to various soil types, provided they have good drainage. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, it can suffer from root rot if the soil is too wet. It is also known for its medicinal properties, particularly in homeopathic remedies for bruises and sprains. Gardeners should note that all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested.CC BY-SA 4.0
