Summary

Arnica lessingii, commonly known as Nodding Arnica, is a perennial herb that is native to subalpine meadows and mountain regions. It is found in Alaska, Yukon, British Columbia, Northwest Territories, and the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia. This plant typically grows to a height of 12 to 24 inches (30-60 cm) and features a clumping form with lance-shaped, green leaves. Nodding Arnica is known for its yellow, daisy-like flowers with a central disk and surrounding rays that bloom in mid to late summer. The flowers are moderately showy and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Nodding Arnica is valued for its medicinal properties, as it has been traditionally used to make salves and ointments for bruises and sprains. It is also appreciated for its ease of maintenance and naturalizing ability in suitable habitats. In cultivation, it is used in wildflower gardens, borders, and as part of naturalistic plantings. It prefers full sun to part shade, moist but well-drained soils, and can tolerate a range of soil types. While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered.CC BY-SA 4.0
