Estimated Native Range
Summary
Arnoglossum ovatum, commonly known as Ovateleaf Cacalia or Ovateleaf Indian Plantain, is a perennial herb native to moist meadows, prairies, and open woodlands of the southeastern United States. It can grow up to 300 cm (120 inches or 10 feet) tall, with a stout, unbranched stem and large, ovate to heart-shaped leaves. The flower heads are small, numerous, and clustered in flat-topped arrays, blooming from early summer to fall. They are typically white or pale green, occasionally with a slight purplish tinge, and are not particularly showy, but they do attract a variety of pollinators.
Ovateleaf Cacalia is valued for its height and structural presence in naturalistic plantings and restoration projects. It is also used in rain gardens due to its tolerance for moist conditions. This species thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist to wet soils with good drainage. While it is not prone to serious pests or diseases, it can suffer from root rot in poorly drained soils. It is not known to be invasive and does not have aggressive roots, making it a reliable choice for cultivation in appropriate settings.CC BY-SA 4.0
