Estimated Native Range
Summary
Artemisia borealis, commonly known as Northern Wormwood or Boreal Sage, is a perennial herb native to tundra and alpine regions, including the Arctic and subarctic zones of Eurasia and North America, as well as mountainous areas such as the Rockies, Cascades, and Sierra Nevada, extending as far south as Arizona and New Mexico. In Europe, it is found in Scandinavia and the central European mountains. It typically grows 3-8 inches tall and features gray-green, tomentose (densely woolly) stems with aromatic leaves that release a strong scent when crushed. The plant is adapted to cold, harsh environments with well-drained soils.
Northern Wormwood is valued for its hardiness and aromatic foliage, which can be used in traditional medicine and as a flavoring agent in some culinary preparations. It is often used in rock gardens, as a ground cover in cold climate landscapes, and for restoration in its native habitat. It requires minimal maintenance, thriving in full sun to part shade and preferring dry, well-drained soils. While not commonly affected by diseases, it can be susceptible to root rot in overly moist conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
