Summary

Arthropodium cirratum, commonly known as New Zealand Rock Lily or Renga Renga Lily, is an evergreen perennial herb native to coastal forests, rocky outcrops, and shaded stream banks in New Zealand. It has a clumping habit with strappy leaves that are 30–60 cm (12–24 in) long and 3–10 cm (1.2–3.9 in) wide. The flower stalks can reach up to one meter in height and bear clusters of white, six-petalled flowers in the summer. Each flower is about 2 cm (0.8 in) across, with distinctive tricolored stamens—purple and white, with yellow at the curled end. The plant also produces fleshy rhizomes that are 2–3 cm (0.8–1.2 in) wide.

The New Zealand Rock Lily is valued for its lush foliage and delicate flowers, which add a tropical feel to gardens. It is suitable for underplanting beneath trees, in shaded borders, or as a ground cover. The flowers are mildly fragrant and attract pollinators. The rhizomes are a traditional Maori food source, edible when cooked. This plant prefers part shade but can tolerate some sun if kept moist. It requires medium amounts of water and well-drained soil. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to snail and slug damage. The New Zealand Rock Lily is not known for being invasive and is considered safe for cultivation outside its native range.CC BY-SA 4.0
