Estimated Native Range
Summary
Asclepias mellodora, commonly known as Rush Milkweed, is a deciduous perennial subshrub or herb. It is native to South America. This species typically grows to a height of 2-4 feet (0.6-1.2 meters) and a width of 0.2-0.3 feet (0.06-0.09 meters). Rush Milkweed has narrow, linear leaves and clusters of intricate flowers that are a mix of white, yellow, and orange, blooming in the summer. The flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, particularly butterflies, including the monarch butterfly for which it serves as a crucial host plant for larvae.
Rush Milkweed is valued for its drought tolerance and its role in supporting pollinator populations, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping, wildlife gardens, and naturalized areas. It is often used in restoration projects where its ability to thrive in poor, well-drained soils is advantageous. In cultivation, it requires full sun and can tolerate low to medium amounts of water, making it suitable for gardens with slow-draining soils. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to aphids and milkweed bugs. Gardeners should be aware that all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested.CC BY-SA 4.0
