Summary

Asparagus scandens, commonly known as climbing asparagus fern or krulkransie, is a perennial vine native to the shady, moist afro-montane forests of the Western Cape in South Africa, extending eastwards to the Tsitsikamma Mountains. It typically thrives under the canopy of these forests, where it receives dappled sunlight and is protected from harsh conditions. This plant can reach lengths of several meters when supported by trees or other structures. Its feathery, thornless foliage is deep green, creating a delicate texture in garden settings. Small, inconspicuous white flowers may appear in spring, followed by red berries that attract birds.

Climbing asparagus fern is valued for its lush, fern-like foliage which makes it an excellent choice for adding greenery to shaded areas in gardens. It is often used in hanging baskets, as a ground cover, or for covering walls and trellises in part shade to shade conditions. While it prefers moist, well-drained soil, it is notably drought-tolerant once established. Gardeners should be cautious, as Asparagus scandens can become invasive outside its native range, spreading through both seeds and rhizomes. It is recommended to plant it in areas where it can be controlled or contained.CC BY-SA 4.0
