Summary
Aspidotis densa, commonly known as Indian’s Dream, is a perennial herbaceous fern native to rocky outcrops and serpentine soils in chaparral, woodlands, and coastal scrub areas of western North America, particularly in California and Oregon. It is a small fern, typically growing 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 cm) tall. The fronds are borne on long petioles, with the blade occupying less than half of the total length of the leaf, including the petiole. The leaf blade is triangular and composed of many leaflets which are subdivided into untoothed segments, giving it a delicate and lacy appearance. The fern does not produce flowers but reproduces via spores that are found in small clusters called sori on the underside of the leaflets.
Indian’s Dream is appreciated for its intricate foliage and its ability to thrive in challenging soil conditions, making it a unique addition to rock gardens, ferneries, and native plant landscapes. It is often used in cultivation for its adaptability to part shade conditions and its preference for well-drained soils. While it can tolerate full sun in cooler climates, in hotter areas it benefits from some shade. This fern is relatively low maintenance but may require additional water during prolonged dry periods. It is not known for significant pest or disease problems, but it can be sensitive to overwatering and poor drainage.CC BY-SA 4.0
