Summary
Astelia chathamica, commonly known as Chatham Islands kakaha, Maori flax, or silver spear, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the Chatham Islands of New Zealand, where it thrives in coastal forests, shrublands, and cliff areas. It typically grows to about 1.2 m (4 ft) tall and forms a large clump of sword-shaped, silver-green leaves that can add a striking texture to garden compositions. The plant produces small, inconspicuous green flowers, followed by red berries on female plants, which are attractive to birds. Flowering occurs in spring and early summer, and while the flowers are not particularly showy, the foliage is highly ornamental throughout the year.
Astelia chathamica is valued for its unique foliage that provides a contrast to other garden plants. It is used in cultivation for mass plantings, as a focal point in borders, and in containers. This species prefers partial shade but can tolerate full sun if provided with enough moisture. It requires fertile, well-drained soil and moderate watering, with reduced watering in the winter. While hardy down to −3 °C (27 °F), it may need protection from frost in colder climates. The plant is generally low-maintenance but can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
