Estimated Native Range
Summary
Astelia nervosa, commonly known as Mountain Astelia, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the forest understoreys, subalpine scrub, and tussock grasslands of New Zealand. It typically grows to a height of 2-4 feet (0.6-1.2 meters) and a width of 3-4 feet (0.9-1.2 meters). This plant forms clumps of long, narrow, silver-green leaves that arch gracefully and can add a striking texture to garden compositions. The inconspicuous greenish-white flowers may not be particularly showy, but they give way to orange fruits that can provide a visual interest in the landscape.
Mountain Astelia is valued for its architectural foliage and its ability to provide year-round interest in gardens. It is often used in shaded garden beds, as an underplanting for larger trees, or in containers. It prefers a sheltered position with dappled light, although it can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. The plant requires well-drained soil and consistent moisture, but once established, it is relatively low maintenance. It is not known for serious pest or disease problems, but root rot can occur in poorly drained soils. While it is not invasive, care should be taken to provide sufficient space for its mature size to avoid overcrowding.CC BY-SA 4.0
