Estimated Native Range
Summary
Aster ageratoides, commonly known as White Wood Aster, is a perennial herb native to forest margins, grasslands, and stream banks in East Asia, including countries like China, Korea, and Japan. It typically grows to a height of 1-3 feet (30-90 cm) and spreads 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) wide. The plant forms clumps of heart-shaped, dark green leaves and produces an abundance of star-shaped, white flowers with yellow centers from late summer to fall. The flowers are modestly showy and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
White Wood Aster is valued for its late-season blooms and its ability to thrive in shaded conditions, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shade gardens, and naturalized areas. It is also used for border planting and as ground cover. This aster prefers partial shade but can tolerate full shade and requires well-drained soil with consistent moisture. It is relatively low maintenance, but deadheading can encourage additional blooming. While generally disease-resistant, it can occasionally suffer from powdery mildew or rust.CC BY-SA 4.0
