Estimated Native Range
Summary
Astrolepis sinuata, commonly known as Wavy Scaly Cloakfern, is a semi-deciduous perennial fern native to rocky slopes, canyons, and arid grasslands in the southwestern United States, Mexico and parts of Central and South America. It typically grows to a height and width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters), featuring arching fronds with a distinctive wavy margin and a scaly texture. The scales, which are a protective adaptation, give the fronds a silvery appearance. This fern does not produce flowers but reproduces via spores that are released from sori located on the underside of the fronds.
The Wavy Scaly Cloakfern is valued for its drought tolerance and unique foliage, which adds texture to xeriscapes, rock gardens, and desert-themed landscapes. It is well-suited for cultivation in arid regions and requires minimal maintenance once established. This fern thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-draining soil. While it is drought-tolerant, occasional watering during prolonged dry periods can help maintain its vigor. It is not commonly affected by diseases or pests, but overwatering can lead to root rot.CC BY-SA 4.0
