Estimated Native Range
Summary
Astrophytum ornatum, commonly known as Bishop’s Cap, is an evergreen succulent native to the arid regions of Central Mexico, particularly the Central Plateau. It typically grows as a solitary, cylindrical plant and can reach up to 2 meters (6.6 ft) in height and 30 centimeters (12 in) in width. The plant’s surface is adorned with numerous white woolly flakes, which serve as a protective mechanism against intense sunlight. Its striking canary yellow flowers, which measure 7 to 8 centimeters in length, bloom throughout the summer and are quite showy, adding ornamental value to the plant.
Bishop’s Cap is valued for its unique appearance and low maintenance requirements, making it a popular choice for rock gardens, desert landscapes, and as a container plant. It thrives in well-drained soils and is remarkably resistant to root rot. When grown in filtered light or shade, the plant maintains a lush dark green color. It is also cold tolerant to 25 °F (−4 °C), allowing it to survive in cooler climates than many other succulents. The Royal Horticultural Society has recognized its horticultural merit with an Award of Garden Merit. For optimal growth, it should be placed in part shade and watered sparingly, as it is adapted to dry conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
