Estimated Native Range
Summary
Atriplex linearis, commonly known as Thinleaf Fourwing Saltbush, is an evergreen or semi-deciduous shrub native to arid regions, including desert scrub, saline flats, and dry washes in the Southwestern USA and Northwest Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 2-6 feet (0.6-1.8 meters) and a width of 2-5 feet (0.6-1.5 meters). The plant has a sprawling habit with slender stems and narrow, linear leaves that are often covered with a fine white powder, giving it a grayish appearance. The inconspicuous flowers, which appear in the spring, summer, and fall, can range in color from green to brown and pink, and are not particularly showy.
Thinleaf Fourwing Saltbush is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor, saline soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and habitat restoration projects. It is also used for erosion control and as a windbreak in arid landscapes. This plant is well-suited to full sun exposure and requires minimal water once established, preferring soils with fast drainage. While it is not known for significant pest or disease issues, it can spread readily by seed and may become weedy in some areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
