Estimated Native Range
Summary
Atriplex patula, commonly known as spear saltbush or spreading orach, is an annual herbaceous plant in the genus Atriplex. It typically grows to a height of 20-31 inches with rhomboid, slightly succulent leaves and produces small, inconspicuous flowers arranged in separated clusters. The plant is adapted to saline conditions and often accumulates salt from its environment, which can contribute to soil desalination. Native to a wide range of habitats including coastal areas, disturbed sites, and saline environments across Asia, North America, Europe, and Africa, it is particularly common in coastal salt marshes and inland saline flats.
Spear saltbush is valued for its ability to grow in poor, saline soils where other plants may struggle, making it useful for soil stabilization and rehabilitation of degraded lands. It is also used as an ornamental in gardens for its foliage and tolerance of harsh conditions. In cultivation, Atriplex patula requires full sun to part shade, and it is highly tolerant of drought and saline soils. It is often found in urban environments, such as along roadsides and in waste areas, where it can establish quickly. However, gardeners should be cautious as it can become potentially invasive outside its native range, particularly in similar saline habitats.CC BY-SA 4.0
