Estimated Native Range
Summary
Atriplex serenana, commonly known as Bractscale or Stinking Orach, is an annual herb that is native to coastal sage scrub and chaparral habitats, as well as saline and alkaline soils in California and Baja California. It often occupies alkali flats, beach bluffs, and disturbed areas. This plant is well-adapted to its harsh native environments, typically forming dense mats with scaly stems that can extend up to 3.3 feet in length. The leaves are variable in shape, often toothed, and the flowers are inconspicuous, appearing in hard clusters or spikelike inflorescences that are not particularly showy.
Bractscale is valued for its ability to thrive in challenging soil conditions, making it a useful plant for restoration projects and erosion control in appropriate regions. It is also used in xeriscaping due to its low water requirements. In cultivation, it prefers full sun exposure and can tolerate a range of soil types, provided they are well-drained. While not commonly used in ornamental horticulture, its unique texture and form can add interest to drought-tolerant gardens.CC BY-SA 4.0
