Estimated Native Range
Summary
Bahia absinthifolia, commonly known as Hairyseed Bahia or Desert Bahia, is a perennial herb native to arid desert scrub and sandy plains of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It typically grows up to 40 cm (16 inches) tall and is adapted to harsh, dry environments. The plant features narrow, linear leaves and yellow flowers with both ray and disc florets that bloom from late spring to early fall, providing a long season of interest. The flowers are modest in size but can be quite showy due to their bright color and abundance.
Desert Bahia is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor, sandy soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and naturalistic plantings in arid regions. It is also used for erosion control due to its deep root system. In cultivation, it requires full sun exposure and minimal water once established, reflecting its desert origins. While it is not commonly found in traditional garden settings, its resilience and low maintenance make it a suitable option for challenging sites.CC BY-SA 4.0
