Estimated Native Range
Summary
Baldellia ranunculoides, commonly known as Lesser Water-Plantain, is a perennial herbaceous aquatic plant native to shallow freshwater habitats such as pond margins, slow-moving streams, and marshes across Europe and North Africa. It typically grows in water up to 30 centimeters deep. The plant reaches up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) in height when flowering, with erect stems emerging above the water surface. Lesser Water-Plantain produces delicate umbels of up to five flowers, each with three pink and white petals, 10–15 millimeters (0.4–0.6 inches) in diameter, blooming from June to August. The flowers are modest in size but can add a subtle charm to water gardens.
In cultivation, Lesser Water-Plantain is valued for its ability to thrive in wet conditions and its contribution to the biodiversity of aquatic environments. It is often used in water gardens, ponds, and naturalistic water features. It requires full sun to flourish and prefers soils with slow or standing drainage, mimicking its natural wetland habitat. While it is not a demanding plant, it may need to be managed to prevent it from spreading too widely in smaller water bodies.CC BY-SA 4.0
