Estimated Native Range
Summary
Barnardia japonica, commonly known as Japanese Jacinth, is a deciduous perennial bulb native to woodland margins, grassy slopes, and coastal areas of Northeast Asia, including China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea. It typically grows to a height of 0.9-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) and a width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). The plant forms clumps of strap-shaped leaves, and in late summer to fall, it produces racemes of star-shaped, pink flowers that are moderately showy and attract pollinators.
Japanese Jacinth is appreciated for its delicate pink blooms and ease of maintenance. It is suitable for border plantings, rock gardens, and underplanting beneath deciduous trees. It thrives in well-drained, fertile soil and prefers a position with full sun to part shade. While it requires medium amounts of water, it is relatively drought-tolerant once established. Gardeners should be aware that it may naturalize and spread over time, but it is not typically aggressive.CC BY-SA 4.0
