Estimated Native Range
Summary
Beckmannia syzigachne, commonly known as American Sloughgrass, is an annual grass that is typically found in wet meadows, marshes, and along the edges of streams and ponds. It is native to North America, Asia, and the Russian Far East. This grass usually reaches a height of 0.7-3 feet (0.2-0.9 meters) and can spread to about 3 feet (0.9 meters) wide. American Sloughgrass has a tufted growth habit with flat, bright green leaves and produces inflorescences that are narrow and spikelike, with a green to purplish tint, appearing in late spring to early summer.
American Sloughgrass is valued for its ability to thrive in wet conditions and is often used for soil stabilization along waterways. It is also utilized in rain gardens and for wildlife habitat restoration, as it provides cover and food for various bird species. In cultivation, it requires full sun to part shade and consistently moist to wet soil conditions. It is not drought-tolerant and will need regular watering if not grown in naturally wet areas. While it is not commonly found in traditional garden settings, its ecological benefits make it a useful species for naturalized plantings.CC BY-SA 4.0
