Estimated Native Range
Summary
Begonia grandis, commonly known as Hardy Begonia, is a herbaceous perennial native to woodland margins, valley forests, and stream banks in China and Japan. It typically grows to a height of 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) and spreads 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) wide. The plant features attractive, heart-shaped leaves that are green on the top and red underneath, creating a striking contrast. The pink or white flowers are showy and bloom from late summer through fall, adding color to the garden when many other plants have finished flowering.
Hardy Begonia is valued for its shade tolerance and ornamental foliage, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and container plantings. It prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. While it is hardy to USDA zones 6–7, in colder climates, it can be grown as an annual or its tubers can be overwintered indoors. It is relatively low maintenance but can be susceptible to powdery mildew and requires good air circulation to prevent this issue. Hardy Begonia can spread by self-seeding and may naturalize in ideal conditions, but it is not typically invasive.CC BY-SA 4.0
