Estimated Native Range
Summary
Berlandiera texana, commonly known as Texas Greeneyes, is a perennial herb native to limestone soils in open woodlands, prairies, and grasslands primarily in Texas and Oklahoma, with its range extending into the Central United States. It typically grows to a height of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters) and a width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). Texas Greeneyes features a basal rosette of leaves from which tall flower stalks arise, bearing daisy-like flowers with bright yellow rays and a distinctive chocolate-scented, maroon center, blooming profusely in the summer and fall. The flowers are quite showy and attract a variety of pollinators.
This plant is valued for its drought tolerance and the unique, sweet fragrance of its flowers, which can add an aromatic dimension to gardens. It is often used in wildflower gardens, xeriscaping, and as a border plant. Texas Greeneyes thrives in full sun and requires low to medium amounts of water, making it suitable for gardens with well-drained soils. While it is generally easy to maintain, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
