Summary
Berzelia lanuginosa, commonly known as Button Bush (not to be confused with Cephalanthus occidentalis, which shares the same common name), is a perennial shrub native to the fynbos heathland and mountainous areas of the Western Cape in South Africa. This species typically grows to a height of 4 to 6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 meters) and is characterized by its dense, rounded form. It produces clusters of small, creamy-white flowers that are highly attractive to pollinators during its flowering season, which occurs in late winter to spring. The flowers are notable for their spherical shape and long-lasting nature, often used in floral arrangements.
Berzelia lanuginosa is valued for its unique, ornamental flower heads and its ability to adapt to various garden settings, provided it has a well-draining soil. It is often used in mixed borders, as a specimen plant, or in Mediterranean-style gardens. In cultivation, it requires full sun to light shade and prefers regular watering, especially during the dry season. While it is hardy in USDA zones 9a to 11, it can be sensitive to frost in colder regions. Gardeners should be aware that this plant may require protection from heavy frosts. It is relatively low-maintenance, but deadheading can encourage further blooming.CC BY-SA 4.0
