Estimated Native Range
Summary
Billardiera cymosa, commonly known as Sweet Appleberry, is an evergreen perennial vine native to the cool temperate forests, heathlands, and coastal areas of Southern Australia. It typically grows to a height of 3-6 feet (0.9-1.8 meters) and can spread 3-9 feet (0.9-2.7 meters) wide. Sweet Appleberry is characterized by its twining habit and small, lance-shaped leaves. It produces an abundance of small, bell-shaped flowers that are predominantly purple and sometimes white, blue, or red, appearing in the spring. The flowers are followed by edible, apple-shaped berries that are green maturing to yellow.
Sweet Appleberry is valued for its ornamental flowers and edible fruit, which can be used in jellies and pies. It is suitable for growing over fences, trellises, and as a ground cover in gardens. This vine prefers a position in full sun to part shade and requires well-drained soil with consistent moisture. It is relatively low maintenance but benefits from occasional pruning to maintain shape and promote denser growth. While generally pest-free, it can be susceptible to scale insects and sooty mold. Sweet Appleberry is not known to be invasive outside its native range, but as with all non-native plants, care should be taken to prevent unwanted spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
