Summary

Bletilla ochracea, commonly known as Chinese Ground Orchid, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to open woodlands and grassy slopes in regions of China, including Gansu, Guangxi, and Yunnan, as well as Vietnam. It typically grows to a height of 12-24 inches (30-60 cm) with a similar spread. The Chinese Ground Orchid has pleated, sword-shaped leaves and produces racemes of showy, bright yellow flowers in the spring and early summer. The flowers resemble small butterflies, hence the common name. The plant’s pseudobulbs store water, aiding in its survival through dry periods.

Bletilla ochracea is valued for its striking flowers and ease of growth in temperate gardens. It is often used in shaded border plantings, woodland gardens, and as a container plant. This orchid thrives in well-drained, humus-rich soil and prefers partial shade, mimicking its natural woodland habitat. Regular watering during the growing season and a dry rest in winter will help mimic its natural cycle. While generally disease-resistant, it can suffer from root rot if overwatered. It is also frost-tender and may require protection in colder climates. In traditional Chinese medicine, Bletilla ochracea is used for its hemostatic properties to stop bleeding.CC BY-SA 4.0
