Summary
Bletilla striata, commonly known as Chinese Ground Orchid, is a deciduous perennial herb native to grassy slopes, forest clearings, and along stream banks in East Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea. It typically grows to a height of 12-24 inches (30-60 cm) with a similar spread. The plant features pleated, spear-shaped leaves and a clumping growth habit. Bletilla striata breaks dormancy in early spring, with each tuber from the previous year potentially sending out multiple shoots. These growths mature over a couple of months and eventually bear racemes of 3-7 magenta-pink flowers, each about 1.5-2.5 inches (4-6 cm) across, from late spring to early summer. The flowers are showy and resemble miniature Cattleya orchids, making them a unique addition to temperate gardens.
The Chinese Ground Orchid is valued for its ease of cultivation and its striking orchid-like flowers. It is commonly used in shaded borders, woodland gardens, and as a specimen in rock gardens. It requires part shade, consistent moisture, and well-draining, humus-rich soil to thrive. While it is hardy in USDA zones 5–9, winter mulching is advised in zone 5 to protect against cold. Although it tolerates moisture during winter dormancy better than most terrestrial orchids, excessive wetness can still be detrimental. It is relatively low-maintenance but can suffer from slugs and snails, which are attracted to the tender leaves and flowers.CC BY-SA 4.0
