Summary

Bloomeria crocea, commonly known as Goldenstar, is a deciduous perennial herb that is native to the chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and grasslands of California and Baja California. It typically grows to a height of 0.7-2 feet (0.2-0.6 meters) and a width of 0.4-0.8 feet (0.1-0.2 meters). The plant forms a basal rosette from which emerges a single leaf and a flowering stalk bearing a loose umbel of vibrant yellow flowers. The six-petaled flowers bloom in the spring and are quite showy, making them attractive to pollinators such as bees. The corm of Bloomeria crocea is fibrous and usually produces only one leaf. After pollination, the plant produces capsules filled with small black seeds, which take three to four years to mature into flowering plants.

Goldenstar is valued for its bright, cheerful flowers and is often used in wildflower gardens, native plant landscapes, and as a border plant. It is relatively easy to maintain, requiring medium amounts of water and thriving in soils with medium to fast drainage. Goldenstar prefers full sun to part shade and is well-suited to Mediterranean climates. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, it can be sensitive to overwatering, which may lead to rot. Gardeners should ensure proper soil drainage to prevent such issues.CC BY-SA 4.0
