Estimated Native Range
Summary
Bolboschoenus fluviatilis, commonly known as River Bulrush, is a perennial sedge, that is evergreen in mild climates. It is native to marshes, wet meadows, and riparian zones in North America, including the United States and Canada, and has occuring in parts of Australia and New Zealand. This sedge typically reaches heights of 4-6 feet (1.2-1.8 meters) with a clumping spread of about 2 feet (0.6 meters). It features stout, triangular stems and brownish flower clusters that appear in summer, which are not particularly showy but are interesting texturally.
River Bulrush is valued for its ability to stabilize soil and filter water, making it an excellent choice for wetland restoration, bioswales, and water gardens. It is also used ornamentally in pond margins and bog gardens. This plant thrives in full sun but can tolerate part shade. It requires consistently moist to wet soil conditions and can even grow in shallow standing water. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can spread aggressively by rhizomes and may need to be managed to prevent unwanted colonization.CC BY-SA 4.0
