Summary
Boronia heterophylla, commonly known as Red Boronia, is a fragrant evergreen shrub native to the open forests and coastal heathlands of south-western Australia, particularly within the Esperance Plains, Jarrah Forest, Swan Coastal Plain, and Warren biogeographic regions. It typically grows up to 10 feet tall and features trifoliate leaves. The plant is renowned for its deep pink to red, four-petalled flowers that bloom from September to November, arranged singly in leaf axils, which are highly attractive to pollinators and gardeners alike. The flowers are especially showy, making it a popular choice for ornamental use.
Red Boronia is valued for its striking floral display and pleasant scent, which can enhance sensory gardens. It is often used in residential gardens, borders, and as a cut flower due to its long vase life. This plant thrives in well-drained, sandy or loamy soil, and requires a sunny to partly shaded location with protection from harsh afternoon sun. It is relatively drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during extended dry periods. While it is not considered threatened, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. To maintain its compact form and encourage denser flowering, light pruning after the blooming season is recommended.CC BY-SA 4.0
