Summary
Borzicactus strausii, commonly known as the Snow Torch Cactus, is a slow-growing succulent native to the high-altitude, arid mountainous regions of Bolivia and Argentina. It typically reaches a height of 6-10 feet (1.8-3 meters) and is characterized by its columnar growth habit, forming clusters of ribbed, cylindrical stems. The stems are adorned with areoles from which spines emerge. During the spring and summer months, it produces showy, funnel-shaped white flowers that are quite attractive and contrast well with the green of the stems.
The Snow Torch Cactus is valued for its striking vertical form and its ability to thrive in dry, rocky environments, making it a suitable choice for rock gardens, xeriscaping, and as a focal point in cactus and succulent collections. It requires minimal maintenance once established and is drought-tolerant. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to part shade, which helps to encourage flowering, and it must be planted in fast-draining sandy or loamy soils to prevent root rot. Overwatering and poor drainage are common issues that can lead to disease. It is also susceptible to pests such as spider mites and scale insects. When grown outside its native range, care should be taken to protect it from excessive moisture and freezing temperatures.CC BY-SA 4.0
