Estimated Native Range
Summary
Bothriochloa ischaemum, commonly known as Yellow Bluestem, is a perennial grass originally from open grasslands and light woodlands of Eurasia. It has been introduced to various regions, including Texas, where it has become invasive. This species typically grows to 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters) in height, with a similar spread, and forms dense clumps. It has narrow, blue-green leaves and produces fluffy, yellow to silver-grey seed heads in late summer to fall, which can be quite showy. The plant’s ability to thrive in a variety of soil types and its drought tolerance make it a low-maintenance option for erosion control and as forage in pastures.
Yellow Bluestem is valued for its drought resistance and is often used in areas where soil stabilization is needed. It is also utilized in rural settings for livestock grazing. However, due to its invasive nature, it is not recommended for ornamental use in gardens, especially outside its native range. It prefers full sun but can tolerate light shade and is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, though it performs best in well-drained soils. There are no significant disease or pest issues, but its aggressive growth can displace native vegetation and alter ecosystems.CC BY-SA 4.0
