Estimated Native Range
Summary
Bouteloua aristidoides, commonly known as Needle Grama, is an annual grass native to arid and semi-arid regions, including deserts and dry grasslands in California, Arizona, and western North America. This species typically grows in open areas where it can receive full sunlight. It is a low-growing grass, usually reaching heights of 10 to 30 centimeters, with a tufted habit and slender, erect stems. Needle Grama produces narrow, spike-like inflorescences that are greenish to purplish in color, appearing in the late summer to early fall. The flowers are not particularly showy, but they do add a fine-textured element to the landscape.
Needle Grama is valued for its drought tolerance and is often used in xeriscaping, a landscaping method that reduces or eliminates the need for supplemental water from irrigation. It is suitable for naturalized areas, rock gardens, and as a ground cover in arid environments. For cultivation, it prefers well-drained soils and thrives in full sun. While it is not commonly used for ornamental purposes, it can contribute to soil stabilization and erosion control. Needle Grama is relatively low-maintenance, but it may reseed prolifically under favorable conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
