Estimated Native Range
Summary
Bouteloua breviseta, commonly known as Chino Grama, is a deciduous perennial grass native to arid regions, including prairies, plains, and mesas in the Southwestern USA and Northeastern Mexico. It typically grows up to 40 centimeters tall with tough stems at the bases. The inflorescence is compact, measuring 2 to 4 centimeters long, and may have branches. Chino Grama primarily reproduces vegetatively by budding and occasionally by seed. Its resilience allows it to establish in areas where other grasses may struggle.
Chino Grama is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soil conditions, making it an excellent choice for erosion control and xeriscaping. It is often used in restoration projects and as a low-maintenance ground cover in arid landscapes. This grass prefers full sun exposure and requires minimal water once established, thriving in soils with medium to fast drainage. While it is not commonly affected by diseases, overwatering can lead to root rot.CC BY-SA 4.0
