Summary
Bouteloua curtipendula, commonly known as Sideoats Grama, is a perennial herbaceous grass native to a wide range of habitats including prairies, open woodlands, and savannas across the temperate and tropical Western Hemisphere, from Canada to Argentina. It typically grows to a height of 3 feet and a width of 2 feet. Sideoats Grama has a distinctive appearance with its oat-like spikelets hanging along one side of the flowering stems, which bloom from mid-summer to fall, providing a subtle ornamental quality. The flowers are usually purple or reddish and turn a tan color as they mature.
This grass is valued for its adaptability to various soil types and its tolerance to drought, making it an excellent choice for native plant gardens, xeriscaping, and erosion control. It is also used for forage in pastures and rangelands. Sideoats Grama thrives in full sun and can handle a range of water conditions, from dry to medium moisture, and is adaptable to different soil drainage types. While it is generally low-maintenance, overwatering or poor drainage can lead to root rot. It is also a host plant for several butterfly species, adding to its ecological value.CC BY-SA 4.0
