Summary
Brachyglottis compacta, commonly known as Alpine Brachyglottis, Compact Brachyglottis, or Dwarf Brachyglottis, is a perennial shrub native to the North Island of New Zealand, specifically thriving in alpine and subalpine zones including rocky slopes and tussock grasslands. It exhibits a moderate growth rate and typically reaches a height of 1-1.5 feet (0.3-0.5 meters) with a similar width of 1.5-2 feet (0.5-0.6 meters). This compact shrub is characterized by its silvery-green, leathery leaves and its bright yellow, daisy-like flowers that bloom in summer, adding a splash of color to the garden. The flowers are particularly showy, attracting pollinators such as bees.
Brachyglottis compacta is valued for its low-maintenance nature, drought tolerance, and ability to thrive in poor soils, making it a suitable choice for rock gardens, alpine gardens, and as ground cover in challenging conditions. It is also used in borders and containers for its attractive foliage and flowers. Gardeners appreciate its adaptability to full sun or part shade, and it performs best in well-drained sandy or loamy soils. While it requires low amounts of water once established, it should be watered regularly during prolonged dry periods. There are no major disease or pest issues, but it can be sensitive to overly wet conditions which may lead to root rot.CC BY-SA 4.0
