Summary
Brahea edulis, commonly known as Guadalupe Palm, is an evergreen palm tree native to Guadalupe Island, Mexico. It thrives in the unique fog oasis ecosystems found on the island, which occur between 400 and 1,000 meters above mean sea level (ASL). These fog oases are characterized by regular fog and cloud cover that provide moisture in an otherwise dry climate, supporting a distinct plant community. Guadalupe Palm typically grows to a height of 4.50 to 13 meters (15 to 43 ft) and is recognized by its fan-shaped fronds and stout, solitary trunk.
The Guadalupe Palm is valued for its slow to moderate growth rate and its ability to adapt to a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage. It produces cream and yellow flowers in the summer, which are followed by edible fruits resembling small coconuts. The palm is drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for xeriscaping and low-water-use gardens. It is often used as a focal point in landscapes, and its ability to withstand coastal conditions makes it popular for seaside plantings. While it prefers full sun, it can also tolerate some shade. Gardeners should be aware that this palm can be susceptible to pests such as spider mites and scale insects.CC BY-SA 4.0
