Summary

Brickellia incana, commonly known as Woolly Brickellbush, is an evergreen subshrub or shrub native to chaparral, desert scrub, and riparian woodland ecosystems in the Southwestern United States, particularly in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and northern Mexico. It typically grows in a spherical clump on the sandy or rocky desert floor, reaching 40 centimeters to 1 meter in height. The leaves of Woolly Brickellbush are distinctive, being gray-green to white with a dense coat of woolly fibers, oval in shape, and up to 3 centimeters long. The inflorescences bear solitary flower heads, each about 2.4 centimeters long, lined with woolly gray-green to grayish purple phyllaries. Each flower head contains about 60 disc florets, which can be red, yellowish, or grayish in color. The fruit is a hairy cylindrical achene about a centimeter long, topped with a pappus of bristles that aid in wind dispersal.

Woolly Brickellbush is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in arid conditions, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and native plant gardens. It is also appreciated for its unique woolly foliage and subtle flower heads, which add texture to the landscape. This plant is well-suited for full sun to part shade, requiring very low to low water once established, and it prefers well-drained soils. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, it may suffer from root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. Woolly Brickellbush is not known for aggressive roots or significant pest problems.CC BY-SA 4.0
