Estimated Native Range
Summary
Brunfelsia pauciflora, commonly known as Brazil Raintree, is a shrubby perennial native to the light woodlands and forest edges of Brazil. It is not a true raintree but is in the Solanaceae family, related to nightshades. This species typically grows up to 2.4 meters tall and 1.5 meters wide, with a greyish-brown, mostly smooth bark that may have occasional longitudinal cracks. Its most striking feature is the tri-color flowers, which change from purple with a white throat to lavender and then white, often displaying all three colors simultaneously as new blooms emerge. The flowers, borne in cymes of up to 10, are about 5 centimeters long and bloom from autumn to early summer, providing a long-lasting and showy display.
The Brazil Raintree is valued for its unique flowering pattern and is used in gardens for its ornamental appeal. It is toxic, particularly the fruit, which should be considered when planting in areas accessible to children and pets. It thrives in full sun to part shade and requires medium amounts of water, preferring soils with medium to fast drainage. While it is relatively easy to maintain, it can be susceptible to pests like spider mites and diseases such as root rot if drainage is poor.CC BY-SA 4.0
