Summary
Buddleja virgata, commonly known as Otterbush, is a deciduous or semi-deciduous shrub native to the open woodlands and scrublands of Southern Africa, including South Africa, Lesotho, and Swaziland, as well as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It typically grows to a height of 3-6 feet (0.9-1.8 meters) and a width of 2-5 feet (0.6-1.5 meters), featuring an open, sprawling habit with arching branches. The leaves are narrow and elongated, providing a textured backdrop for the plant’s summer and fall blooming period. Otterbush produces clusters of small, tubular white flowers that are attractive to butterflies and other pollinators.
Otterbush is appreciated for its drought tolerance and the delicate appearance of its flowers, which add a light, airy feel to garden spaces. It is suitable for xeriscaping, wildlife gardens, and as an informal hedge or screen. In cultivation, it thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils. While it can tolerate low water conditions, moderate watering will support more vigorous growth and flowering. Otterbush is relatively low maintenance but may benefit from occasional pruning to maintain its shape and promote denser foliage.CC BY-SA 4.0
