Estimated Native Range
Summary
Bulbine abyssinica, commonly known as Golden Stars or Yellow Bulbine, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to diverse habitats including grasslands, rocky outcrops, and open woodlands across southern, central, and eastern Africa, extending to Yemen and Sudan in the north, and reaching as far south as the Cape Provinces of South Africa. It typically forms a compact rosette of slender, cylindrical leaves and can reach up to 20 inches in height when in flower. The inflorescence, which appears in early summer or after rains, is a raceme bearing bright yellow, star-shaped flowers with distinctive, tufted stamens that add to its ornamental value.
Golden Stars is valued for its drought tolerance and low maintenance, making it a suitable choice for rock gardens, succulent borders, and xeriscaping. It is also used in traditional medicine in its native range. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to light shade and requires well-drained soil, ideally sandy or loamy. While it is generally free from serious pests and diseases, overwatering can lead to root rot. Bulbine abyssinica is not known to be invasive outside its native range, but as with all non-native plants, care should be taken to monitor its growth and spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
