This species typically grows to a height of 2-4 feet (0.6-1.2 meters) and a width of 2-5 feet (0.6-1.5 meters), featuring dense, compact foliage that makes it an excellent choice for formal hedges and topiary. The leaves are small, glossy, and oval-shaped, providing a rich green backdrop throughout the year. Chinese Boxwood does not typically produce conspicuous flowers, and its value in cultivation is primarily for its foliage.

Chinese Boxwood is valued for its tolerance of heavy pruning and its ability to form dense, low hedges, making it a popular choice for garden borders, formal gardens, and as a foundational planting in landscape design. It is also used in bonsai. While it prefers part shade, it can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. Chinese Boxwood requires well-drained soil and medium amounts of water, and it is relatively low-maintenance once established.
